- Fourteen below zero Tuesday night and not an orange tree or banana bud in this part of the citrus belt hurt in the least. What a glorious climate this is.
- While on the outside lately, John W. Welch gathered considered data relative to the proposed telephone line between here and Rifle. It is Mr. Welch’s opinion that the line will be constructed at no distant day.

- Locally, the weather has been unusual for this time of year in this usually mild climate. Last Friday was cloudy and thawing. Saturday forenoon showed hail and snow, and gentle White River blizzards. Saturday night presented a surprise when it cleared up and the mercury dropped to 23 below zero, the coldest night of the winter for Meeker.
- Claude Wilson, our popular county clerk, requests The Herald to make announcement that he has still a good supply of marriage licenses on hand. We do so.

- One way to spend an evening after a day at work is to sit down, prop your feet up and watch one of your favorite RV shows or get into a good book. Another is to be a Town Council member and spend five hours in a smoke-filled room, working out problems that need to be solved.
- Plans for a Wilderness Country Club development, 12 miles northeast of Meeker on Yellow Jacket Pass, were turned down by the Rio Blanco County Planning Commission last Wednesday night after a 3-hour hearing on the sketch plan for the development.

- The city park has brand-new, heavy-gauge steel picnic tables, thanks to a $7,000 Great Outdoor Colorado grant, a donation from the town, and assistance from members of the Lions Club and the Latter-day Saints Church of Meeker. This was Meeker’s first ever GOCO grant after years of trying.
- The Meeker Volunteer Fire Department is a cherished institution in Meeker, and many Meeker men and women have been part of the organization. At the recent Fire and Rescue Banquet, retired firefighter swerve on hand to dedicate a new plaque that will list the names of all former firefighters.

- Nine persons were present to voice their opposition to expanding the snowmobile ordinance to all recreational vehicles and to the snowmobile ordinance itself. Previously 16 persons had appeared in support of the snowmobile ordinance with no opposition at that meeting. Mayor Cecil E. Lollar stated that he hoped this did not turn out to be a contest as to which side could bring out the greatest numbers.
- It’s a good idea for businessmen to stop worrying about competitors and start worrying about their customers. You’ve got a lot more customers than competitors and your competitors never gave you a nickel’s worth of business and never will.

- Chevron was cited on Oct. 16, 1997, for brine spills from injection lines in the Rangely oil field. The EPA cited Chevron for having 164 separate discharges form production/injection lines from the Rangely Weber Sand Unit.
- A group of local Taekwon-do students demonstrated their skills in the CNCC gym in order to raise dollars for attending the State competition. Joseph Rhodes broke through a concrete slab with his bare hand in his first-ever attempt.
