• John W. Lowell, Jr., had an unpleasant experience with wolves recently, at least the Craig Courier so reports. He was on his way horseback from Lily to Craig, and when about 10 miles from his destination he noticed three large gray wolves charging after him. The snow was too deep for the young man’s horse to make much of a race, and being unarmed Johnny quickly realized he had to run some kind of a bluff. Wheeling his horse, he let forth several yells which would have put any Comanche to shame, and they had the desired effect, for the wolves gave up the chase. Mr. Lowell was thoroughly frightened, however, and he doesn’t want to undergo another incident of that kind.

• Gates Kersberg arrived Saturday eve. He will open up in the wholesale liquor trade about the 15th of April, Mr. K. has leased two storerooms in the Baer building, and is remodeling them to suit the business.

• The last storm of the season put in appearance last Friday evening. The storm was preceded by thunder and lightning; followed by rain, and during the night, snow to the extent of 6 or 7 inches. Saturday started off with snow and light blizzard. Cleared off in forenoon. Then followed sunshine and a cold night.

• A Herald subscriber sends us the following, which, we think, is worthy of consideration: Much of the future progress of a town depends upon the home life of the community. If the town is divided into business, social, religious and political cliques or groups, with hard and fast lines drawn and each pulling against the others, there is but little opportunity for real progress. … The closed mind is the heritage of a town divided against itself. It imbibes but few new thoughts, and those few are centered around the particular clique to which the mind belongs. The open mind gathers in much good for new thought, and that thought is capable of expansion and development in many ways. The open mind is the one for this town.

• Chosen as king and queen to reign over the 1972 Pep Club dance Saturday night in the junior high gim were Miss Janelle Gentry and Nick Kritsas. Attendants to the queen were Miss Joyce Merriam and Miss Cindy Goedert. Nick’s attendants were Ken Norell and Russell Kincher.

• H.G. “Si” Berthelson of Meeker, a member of Governor John Love’s Special Advisory Committee addressed the Rifle Chamber of Commerce membership last week regarding the proposed underground nuclear blast (Rio Blanco) in the Piceance Creek Basin northwest of Rifle. Berthelson told the membership that as a member of the committee he had in fact voted in favor of the 90-kiloton shot which the Atomic Energy Commission and the industrial sponsors say is designed to free natural gas trapped in “tight rock formations.”

• Meeker volunteer firemen doused down a barn on the Neil Dow ranch, also known as the Old Oldland Place long Highway 64 near mile marker 63 last week. Ranch hands had finished burning ditches earlier in the day, but the wind rekindled the fire and blew it into the corral where it destroyed a loafing shed.

• If an idea for an innovative new way to mine soluble minerals works out, up to 100 high-paying jobs could be created in Rio Blanco County. The Rio Blanco Coard of County Commissioners on March 25 granted a special use permit to American Soda LLC, a Glenwood Springs mineral mining company, for an experimental sodium bicarbonate mining operation along Piceance Creek.

• About 20 citizens were on hand for the public meeting Monday night to discuss the proposed one cent sales tax for the Town of Rangely. After a short discussion, the consensus of those present appeared to be that the sales tax was the most equitable and fair way to share the burden of city government as compared to a raise in property taxes.

• One of the many FHA projects included a play presented in the high school auditorium for the elementary school during the first week of March. “The Stolen Prince” was an Oriental play with imaginary settings.

• More than 15 weeks after Rangely’s swimming pool dumped most of its contents down a structural crack, it’s nearly full and ready to use again.

• Tyler Matrisciano received a very high honor this past weekend in Craig at the Moffat County Wrestling Regionals. Not only was he crowned champion the last two weekends, he also received Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
