Meeker cast 251 votes last Tueday, 13 less than a year ago, although the registration was heavier this fall.
B.M. Vaughan has bought the David Smith residence and adjoining lots. Mr. Vaughan will make extensive improvements on the property in the spring. Mr. Smith will build a fine residence on his ranch adjoining town.

Have you heard about the new High School paper? It is to be called “The Meekonian” and it is going to be the most interesting High School paper you ever read.
Not since October 1908 has this section of Rio Blanco County seen as much snow in one storm as that of last Saturday and Sunday. Meekerites woke last Saturday morning to see about 10 inches of new snow on the ground. The storm continued all through Sunday and when it ceased, the U.S. government instruments at Baker’s showed that over 15 inches had fallen. On Sunday night, the mercury fell to 4 below zero.

Celebrating her first birthday Oct. 24, was little Miss Valerie Lynn Renfro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Renfro of Meeker.
Want to be busy? Go to the Bee Busy shop in Meeker. The Herald on first hearing of Bee Busy, thought it sounded like a social action project. The story was traced to Cherry Carson and Vicky Miske. These two enterprising women have decided to open a craft and hobby shop in Meeker.

Jessica Hilkey won the Edna Winslett-Zingheim award for outstanding work on a sheep project. Karolyn Wakefield was chosen outstanding 4-H member for 1997 by the 4-H Foundation.
Kate Schafer, seventh grader at Barone Middle School, has won first place in the local competition of the International Peace Poster Contest sponsored by the Meeker Lions Club.

A large real estate transaction took place recently when Harold Wardell sold about 5,000 acres of land, accompanying permits, and sheep business to a Utah group headed by George Smith and John Faucett of Fort Duschesne. The sale did not include the ranch west of Rangely. Wardell came to Rangely in 1932 with a brother and started operations then.
Sign in the window of the marriage license office: “Out to lunch … think it over.”
N.G. Massey of Rangely won the television set at Ward’s Grand Opening of the new building Saturday, Oct. 28. More than 270 people registered that day. Other winners were Mrs. Kathleen Hefley, a rotisserie, and Mrs. Sharon Conrad, toaster oven.

Parkview Elementary first- grader Blake Meecham was among several young Rangelyites who participated in the first annual Bull Elk Bugling and Camouflage Contest. The contest, sponsored by the Rio Blanco Sheriff’s Dept., has been going on in Meeker for approximately 10 years, but this year Rangely joins in. Bugling winners were Ethan Coe, Kanden Brady, Blake Meecham, Jolene Curtis and Amy Bilbey. Camouflage contest winners were Ashley Steele, Amy Bilbey, Ethan Coe.
Heather Stanely, a University of Wyoming English major from Rangely, recently was selected as a new member of SPURS, the sophomore service honorary at UW.
