The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

The good people of this God-fearing town woke last Sunday morning to find about four inches of snow on the ground — the first of the season for this section.

The Halloween ravages are over once more, only there weren’t many ravages this year. The reason? Too many ‘cops’ on the job.

Last weekend’s snow storm left about 5 inches of the “white stuff” in town but it doesn’t seem to slow the elementary school children down at all. The year’s first snow held .70 of an inch of moisture.

It’s difficult to hold onto one’s freedoms today and the freedom of choice as to how the individual wishes to dispose of his garbage was the issue Monday night when 65-70 Meeker citizens met at Kilowatt Korner to discuss the compulsory trash pick-up ordinance passed last month by the city council.

Chevron was cited by the EPA for having 164 separate discharges from production/injection lines from the Weber Sand Unit. According to the EPA, the discharges resulted from leaks or breaks in flow lines and injection pipelines and have resulted in more than 4.1 million gallons of brine water that found its way into the White River.

From a newspaper marketing standpoint, the Rangely Times had very little value, because the publication has not been profitable for many, many years. All the changes that have taken place, and will take place, have one purpose: to restore the Times to financial health, and bring it to the point where it at least breaks even, and does not require cash infusions and other outside support to stay afloat. The Times was destined for hard times unless dramatic, painful measures were taken. Nobody else wanted to buy the paper, so it fell to us to be the bad guys.
