County, Days Gone By

DAYS GONE BY – October 26th, 2023

The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

Wash Wakeman of Buford, was in town Monday with a load of ranch products. Literally speaking, Wash went into the wilderness some years ago and by the expenditure of lots of muscle, backed by a praiseworthy determination to win, has succeeded in making a good home for himself in his declining years. His ranch is one of the best on North Fork.

Captain Coon returned Thursday, after having safely delivered his band of elk to the Iowa purchaser. He reports the weather anything but pleasant back there.

Cool nights and lovely days are now vouchsafed upon us; the balance of the county is enjoying the same blessed privileges.

Another spell of Missouri weather, Monday and Tuesday–namely, rainy, damp, etc. But we don’t mind it; makes fall plowing easier.

Guy Stealey was autographed at the Meeker Hotel this week.

Charles C. Brown, official inspector of the State University and the chairman of the committee on standards for accredited high schools of the state, says that “the future of Meeker high school is unusually promising, and I wish you all success in the program which you are attempting.”

The sudden increase in Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) reports which started coming in two weeks ago from all over the United States, has a couple more sightings to be added to the growing list. Norm Hughes and high school students David King and Mike Cook all reported watching strange moving objects last week.

Mrs. Suzanne Halandras, as a member of the Miss Rodeo America Pageant Committee, will be in Las Vegas, Nevada again this year when the pageant to choose Miss Rodeo America of 1974 begins November 3.

Mrs. Halandras has been serving on the committee for the past three years and will this year serve as head chaperone.

Doris Warren, Rio Blanco County Treasurer, and Mrs. Ruth Brown, deputy, attended the annual Treasurers seminar held in Fort Collins on the CSU Campus Sunday thru Wednesday of last week.

MHS students recognized Anthony Bilotta, Tom Cisar, Beverly DeVore, and Pat Robinson for “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” for 1998.

More than a dozen hunters this season who thought that they were firing at an elk have instead killed a moose as a result of not confirming their target.

Hunters have had moderate to good success in the big game seasons so far, and Colorado Division of Wildlife biologists say the best hunting is yet to come.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

Former Rangely Hospital administrator Irvin Dean Anderson was sentenced Oct. 15 in District Court in Meeker to a sixty day jail sentence and placed on probation for the next five years. He must also make restitution of $4,200 to the Rangely Hospital. The jail sentence must be served in the county jail within the next year.

Anderson has been in poor health for some time which delayed the trial and sentencing for a number of months.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

A faulty roof measurement some years ago has come back to haunt Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely. And it’ll cost anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 to make the problem go away. The roof over the Hefley building at the Rangely campus leaks badly and must be replaced. Using roof dimension figures from the original builder, CNCC calculated that it would cost about $60,000 to replace the roof. There are a number of other leaky roofs on the aging campus.
