County, Days Gone By

Days Gone By: October 27, 2022

The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

  • “How’s election going?” is an oft-repeated question these days. “I wish it was over,” is remarked quite often — by the candidates.
  • Opinions never change the weather, nor elections.

  • The amendments are again published in this week’s Herald. Vote against all you do not understand.
  • Owing to the good weather the deer did not suffer much this fall during the open season. The usual number of does and fawns were killed by “tenderfoot” and unscrupulous hunters; and it is reported that several elk were killed. Hope the open season is closed this winter.

  • The Denver TV signal (if you hadn’t noticed) has been temporarily off due to moving to a new site and a change in equipment. Bill Robinson hopes to have the equipment installed as soon as possible with a much improved picture for television viewers.
  • The Rio Blanco Sheriff’s Department has been busy this past two weeks hunting for lost people, checking out trespassing reports, illegal shooting from the roadside and delivering emergency messages.
  • Temper is what gets most of us into trouble. Pride is what keeps us there.

  • Workmen scrambled to pour the concrete deck for the new Tenth Street bridge last week. The deck needed to be poured before cold weather set in so the contractor could avoid the need to heat the concrete before pouring.
  • Pornography Awareness Week, Oct. 26 – Nov. 2. Pornography Awareness Week was started over a decade ago by American Family Association to help communities combat the rise of pornography.

(In response to a question about Rangely not having a “75 Years Ago” section, The Rangely Driller — Rangely’s first newspaper  — published its inaugural edition on Sept. 29, 1949, 73 years ago.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

  • Construction starts on B-J building. Bray Realty Company of Grand Junction has finalized plans to construct a new pump repair and service facility for Byron Jackson Pump Devision, Borg-Warner Corporation. The new facility will be located on West Main Street.
  • Daylight Saving Time will change Sunday morning so don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour Saturday night. Even after several years of suffering six months a year between April and October, we still aren’t reconciled to outstanding(?) legislature deciding, after the people voted not to adopt daylight savings time at the polls, that it was best for Colorado to do so.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

  • “It was a stupid idea! A really stupid idea.” Hydrologist Frank Welder, who built an international reputation for his work on water in oil shale formations, is no fan of Taylor Draw dam and Kenney Reservoir. “I told the politicians back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that a dam at Taylor Draw would be an expensive waste of time.”
  • Not rain or sleet or snow kept Jesse and Helena Ratajczak and several members of the Rangely Chamber from celebrating the grand opening of Subway on Friday, Oct. 24.
