The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

From three to five inches of snow fell in Meeker and vicinity last Saturday night, but it soon disappeared the day following wherever the sun could reach it. The weather has been clear since, and the nights are quite cold.

The county commissioners went up in a body Tuesday to investigate the new road adjoining Lakamp’s ranch which connects with what is known to the upper White River people as the New Castle cut-off. They refused to accept the road.

Last Saturday afternoon, a rain followed the raging wind storm and later snow fell. As a result the forest fires east of Meeker were put out and residents adjoining were made happy. In fact it was a veritable Godsend. Yesterday, however, another fire was noticeable in the Big Beaver country, but as to its extent we have been unable to learn.

Gathering cattle for fall shipment is now the main stunt.

Quite a few Meeker people as well as teachers made the trip to Hayden last Saturday for the football game. This is the spirit that gives the boys the fight, when they know the home people are behind them.

Walden and Bender this week started to burn their kiln of brick for the new high school.

A large number of Rangelyites were registered at the Meeker hotel this week.

Meeker will be the host school this coming Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday for the semi-annual Tri-League Student Council meeting. MHS Student Body President Frank Nielslanik reports that approximately 20 schools with 100 representatives will be here to attend.

Mickey Reagle of Mickey’s Beauty Salon will be attending a seminar Oct. 7, 8, 9, and 10 in Grand Junction at the Holiday Inn on the newest styles, colors and hair cutting. Charles Ross of California will be the instructor.

Western Colorado’s Piceance Basin pulled top interest in the Rockies during the past week with a flowing oil well completed in a southern Rio Blanco County area better known for its gas potential.

Cathie Dolan was sworn in Oct. 6 as the newest member of the Meeker Board of Education. She was appointed to succeed Jerry Martin, who left the state.

Early this year, several groups of puppies were found wandering around Meeker. One of the puppies found in rural Meeker had lost one of its paws, either frozen off or cut off. That puppy–Tres, which is Spanish for “three”—is now the official patient mascot at the Walbridge Wing nursing home in Meeker.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will gather wild horses beginning Oct. 15, 1998, from the Sand Wash Wild Horse Herd Management Area located northwest of Craig. Population of the herd is about 360; BLM plans to remove 144.

Lou Ann Vidakovich of Rangely, Colorado, was named the 1973 “Miss Colorado Rural Electric” during the pageant at the Colorado Rural Electric Annual Meeting at Cortez, Colorado on Sept. 25. She received a $200 college scholarship, a dozen red roses, and a gift from the Colorado Rural Electric Association.

A public hearing on a request by Superior Oil Co. for rezoning 7,000 acres of public land of Piceance Creek to heavy industrial use was postponed last week by the County Commissioners.

Reentry drilling of the Project Rio Blanco nuclear stimulated gas well was started Sept. 23. When the reentry drilling has been completed, gas from the well will be flared (burned) in a production test to determine the success of the experiment.

Dovie Howard, age 89, passed away Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at the long term care wing of the Rangely District Hospital, Rangely, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, five brothers, her husband Robert, and her son Robert Jr. Dovie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She had many hobbies, with cooking being her favorite. She loved people and enjoyed visiting with them.

Three men have pled guilty to numerous charges concerning the poaching of one trophy deer and two trophy elk according to Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) District Wildlife Officer Mark Caddy. While the case was settled several months ago, DOW officials emphasize it is a typical example of the investigations poachers face when Colorado and Utah wildlife officials work together with federal wildlife officials.

The Rangely Student Council would like to thank all of the people involved in making this year’s Homecoming a huge success. We would like to thank the Junior class parents for their help with the chili dinner. For assisting with the bonfire activities, we thank the Rangely Fire Department, Moon Lake Electric, and Don Rooks for the use of the truck bed.
