• Doc Wilson and Commissioner McLoughlin, of Rio Blanco County, locked horns in a rough and tumble scrap here last Saturday. They had about four pretty lively rounds in which chairs and various other articles of furniture were used rather freely, winding up with honors about even. The trouble came up over a question of wages owed Doc by Mac.
• George Young, who was shot last week by Jack Rice, is recovering from his injuries, and will not lose either of his eyes as was first expected. Rice is still in the custody of the sheriff, as his preliminary hearing has not yet taken place.

• John R. Hilkey of Josephine park was a business visitor to town Wednesday.
• Now would be a good time to cut the rank crop of weeds that are growing on a number of vacant lots. Not much encouragement to people to build fine residences and keep up handsome lawns if weed seeds from vacant lots are allowed to blow all over.

• The Town of Meeker is once again under the protective hands of a Chief of Police. Meeker has been without a chief for about a month now since Don Brossow turned his resignation in Aug. 5. Taking over the new position is Bill Yates. His previous job covered Dade County, Florida.
• Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday of their investigation of an incident at the Rio Blanco Powder magazine located near Rangely where a quantity of explosives was stolen on July 9.

• George and Claire Howey are the proud new owners of White RIver Liquors at 606 Market St. The couple are longtime Meeker residents and also operate the ice business in town.
• Firefighters were summoned to an apartment building on Water Street last weeka after neighbors spotted smoke wisping from one of the apartments. It turned out that someone had left a pan of food on a burner, and left te burner on, causing the food — and the pan — to get very well done indeed.

• Thomas E. (Tommy) Collins was one of 773 seniors to receive degrees at Colorado State University’s commencement exercises Aug. 20.

• More than 150 people enjoyed powered and glider flights at CNCC’s Aviation Day.
• Julius Poole has been named Grand Marshal for Septemberfest 1997.
