• Why is it that nearly every Populist speech contains an invective harangue against the old parties and asserts that no honest man can longer adhere to either of them, and advises joining the new Populist party and voting the Populist ticket? It is plain that such speakers know nothing of the principles of a party, the foundations upon which a party is based, but imagine that party is only the machinery by which office is obtained.

• Judge Gordon’s new residence, on corner of Garfield Ave. and Sixth St., is now well underway. Emmett Van Cleave is the master mechanic in charge.
• The raising of head lettuce is becoming quite an industry over in the Eagle River Valley. And it is paying big money. If we had a railroad into Meeker the raising of head lettuce would be a thriving industry in the White River Valley.

• It looks like the Denver television problem has fallen out of control again, but this time the Rio Blanco Co. Commissioners are dropping everything and starting anew.
• Retiring after 43 years in the business are Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Idol. Loren has been in the John Deere business longer than anyone in Colorado that he knows of. The new owners, Dave Stoddard and Joe Shimko, have changed the name to S&S Equipment Co.

• Meeker area sheep ranchers on Aug. 10 were part of a major report on the condition of their industry in the United States. That condition, in a word, is terrible.
• The Tenth Street Bridge Project has encountered a few minor construction snags, according to Meeker Town Administrator Sharon Day. As a result, construction will be delayed by about 17 days or so.

• A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the former administrator of the Rangely District Hospital when he failed to show up for a preliminary hearing in Rio Blanco County Court on felony theft charges.
• Head coach Harry Hoff has 13 lettermen out and a total of 42 boys suited up. He indicated his starting line would be Steve Pidcock or Mike Theos at center, Matt Peel and Markel Massey as guards, Grant Peel and Jerry Anderson at tackles, Dale Lee and Ken Echerdt, ends; Duane Aplanalp, quarterback; Gary Jackson or Alan Ducey at tailback and Leigh Vidakovich or Scott Tidwell, halfback.

• Julius and Lomelle Poole ushered in the 1997 Septemberfest Parade on Monday, Sept. 1. Mayor Don Peach had the privilege of driving the Camaro convertible.
• Six months after a horrific murder just outside of Rangely, authorities have captured a second susbect in the drug-related slaying.
