The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

The railroad accident referred to in last week’s issue turned out to have been as bad as at first reported. It happened just below New Castle. An eastern bound Midland freight train and  a Rio Grande passenger, both running at the usual speed, endeavoring to pass one another on a single track. Both trains were piled in a heap. And soon after fire completed the work of destruction. The passengers who were not killed outright or who did not promptly get out of the wreck made gruesome food for the flames. Over thirty were killed and cremated. The Midland crew are held responsible for the accident.

An impromptu dance was given last Saturday evening with a fair attendance.

The Riley & Sheridan thresher started out last week on its fall campaign. Get your orders in early.

The Lions, after missing a week due to the closing of the hotel dining rooms, were in force again last Monday at the Miller house.

Messrs. Oscar Shehorn and A E Lytle and families took in the last day of Apple Pie Day at Rifle.

In case you haven’t noticed (the only way you could have missed was to have a terrible cold) the Meeker sanitation plant has been on the blink again. While the smell is about to drive some people crazy, relief is NOT just around the corner. Manager Ray Green told The Herald Monday that someone dumped a large quantity of an unknown solution into their sewer with the result being that it killed all the chemicals. Mr. Green is not sure what it was but speculated it could have been gasoline, kerosine or oil and urges people not to dump any more. Meanwhile Meeker’s lower west side citizens will have to put up with the stink as there isn’t anything that can be done. Maybe if you’re lucky, you’ll get a two week cold and won’t be able to breathe thru your nose.

Mike Nieslanik has completed his two years with the U.S. Army, was discharged and arrived home Monday of this week. Mike, who received his BS from UNC in Greeley, prior to this military duties plans now to return to UNC in Greeley the first of the week to continue his studies towards a master’s degree.

The foundation was laid last week at the Amick ranch on Little Beaver for a pre-cut home for Mrs. Cleora Amick. Ray McKee is the contractor.

Spec Clapper was honored for 35 years of service to the Miller Creek Ditch on Aug. 20. Stockholders and family members gathered at Paintbrush Park for pot luck to accompany a delicious beef BBQ prepared by Ben Rogers. Don Hilkey, board president, presented Spec with a plaque and watch in recognition of his years of commitment.

La Junta artist Brenda Daniher presented her bronze sculpture of sheep to the people of Meeker. Daniher’s scene of a sheepdog herding sheep is dedicated to Meeker people who volunteer their time to make Meeker a better place. Daniher unveiled her bronze on Sept. 10 on the courthouse lawn.

Most Meeker students have again performed above national and state averages on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the standardized achievement test the district has used for a number of year to assess student learning. Students took the test last spring.

The Kiwanis Club of Rangely is proud to announce the winners for their annual Duck Race. Sherry Orlee’s duck finished first which made her the ecstatic recipient of the $500 grand prize. The second duck to finish was Lorraine Oliver’s. Lorraine received two day trip passes for a white water raft trip compliments of Hatch River Expeditions of Vernal. The third duck to finish belonged to Charlotte Phelps who received the cash equivalent of a collectors musical carousel egg which was donated by the U.S. Post Office of Rangely. (The actual prize was accidentally broken prior to the race.)
