The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

  • Beware of buying goods from strangers. We ask all who have been called on by a certain party who is selling goods for an eastern firm to call in and see us, and compare our prices with his quotations. It is right that money should be kept at home, all things being equal. This is a fair proposition and may result to our mutual advantage. J.W. Hugus & Co./A. Oldland & Co.
  • Coal Creek school house was the scene of a large gathering of people Wednesday night. Dancing was the main feature, and the elegant spread near midnight did not go amiss.

The Meeker Herald ~ 100 years ago

  • A meeting of cattlemen and Utah sheep owners was had last Thursday at Hayden to discuss the reopening of the sheep trail which caused so much trouble last spring. After a lively debate, the attempt to secure the trail was abandoned and the sheep will thus be unable to gain entrance to the White River forest.
  • A young man rushed into this office some days ago and inquired if we knew where some bonded whiskey could be had. Said a member of his family was seriously ill and good whiskey had been prescribed. Told him that being a Democrat we were unfamiliar with the product in question.

  • Rob Raley was crowned King and Voni Gianinetti, the Queen. First attendant was sophomore Denise Chambers and second, Debbi Adams, a junior. The dance was enjoyed by all except for the incident around 12:30. Someone apparently with a twisted sense of humor, threw four bags of a paint-oil mixture into the junior high jym which splattered over some of the girls’ party dresses.
  • Taking the lead in the parade was the “king of the Coaches,” Paul Starbuck and his wife, Ethel. Mr. Starbuck rightly deserves the title as he has been coaching football 34 years now.

  • DeLayne Kract is the 1997 Meeker High School Homecoming Queen, and Isaac LeBlanc is the king. Robyn Stewart and Jed Lake were the first attendants, and Christal Johnson and Ryan Schopp were the second attendants.
  • After senior QB Ty Gates rambled for 13 yards on a QB sneak to the Rangely 26, Meeker could only get to the four yard line before the drive was halted.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

  • When Governor John Love proclaimed Rural Electric Week, Sept. 24-30, rural electric leadership was on hand. Rural electrification has gotten to be pretty big business around the country with consumer owned rural electric systems serving more than 80% of the nation’s counties.
  • On at least three different occasions, Senator McGovern has compared President Nixon unfavorably with German dictator Adolph Hitler. This character vilification has gone far enough and is certainly a violation of Code of Fair Campaign Practices.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

  • Commissioners directed that a resolution be drafted to abandon one mile of County Road 142 in the Black’s Gulch area. The last mile of the dead end county road is on private property.
  • Shortly after 2 p.m. on Sept. 19, a truck hauling a 138-foot long pre-stressed concrete I-beam weighing 119,000 pounds left the road approximately 13 miles west of Rangely on Highway 64. The exact cause of the mishap remains unknown. It was destined to Meeker along with five others for a bridge downtown.

What is this section?

Days Gone By is a snapshot of our history from the archives of The Meeker Herald and Rangely Times.

The next time you post a news item on social media instead of sending it to your community newspaper, stop and think about how anyone is ever going to be able to track that information down a hundred or so years from now.

Hmm …

Did you take an interesting trip? Did you get engaged? Did you have a baby? Do you have a VERY ADORABLE photo of your pet that you’d like your community to see? Do you know the secret for growing perfect tomatoes?

Send it in! Create a permanent record anyone can find and enjoy a hundred years from now.

C’mon. We dare ya. >> [email protected]
