Editor’s Column – Give honor where honor is due

“America’s Veterans have served their country with the belief that democracy and freedom are ideals to be upheld around the world.”

~ John Doolittle

It’s fitting that the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving with its focus on gratitude is the same month in which we observe Veterans Day.

We may find it difficult to be grateful for our government and its actions or inactions. We may struggle to accept the reasons given for sending our soldiers to far-off lands in defense of democracy, human rights and freedom. We may even — from the cozy comfort of our easy chairs — question the decisions made in the course of battle. That’s all part of the benefit of living in a free country where we’re allowed to question and protest and disagree.

What we should never find difficult is holding gratitude for the men and women who have enlisted in our armed forces and served in whatever capacity, at home or abroad, in wartime or at peace.

This week, remember those who have trudged this road of service to our country, thank the ones you can, and show your support by voting for legislators who will do right by them, both when they’re in active service and after they come home.
