The history of the Meeker VFW Post No. 5843 reflects a deep commitment to serving veterans and the community. The post is part of the larger Veterans of Foreign Wars organization, which was founded in 1899 to advocate for the rights and benefits of those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Initially established to support veterans of the Spanish-American War, the VFW quickly expanded as other veterans came together for similar reasons. This has resulted in the VFW playing a crucial role in advocating for pivotal legislation to support veterans over the years, including the establishment of the Veterans Administration and the GI Bill.
At the local level, Meeker VFW Post No. 5843 has undertaken numerous initiatives to support veterans and the community. They’ve provided scholarships to local youth, organized Honor Guard services at veteran funerals, and designed a Veterans Memorial in front of the county courthouse. Their commitment to educating children on patriotism and their support for veterans traveling to medical facilities showcase their ongoing dedication.
Donating to local VFW posts like the one in Meeker is essential for sustaining these vital programs and services. The donations help maintain operations, fund scholarships, and support veterans in need. Contributions can be dropped off directly at the local VFW or at the Bank of San Juans in Meeker, ensuring that funds directly impact the community and support those who have served. Every donation helps strengthen the organization and its efforts to make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families.
Donation cans will be popping up all over Meeker in local businesses if you would like to showcase one of these cans please contact Frank Stewart at 970-878-5182 or drop by the local VFW office located at 290 Fourth St. We have our meetings every second Thursday of the month starting at 5:30 p.m.we would love to see you there and community members are welcome!
In addition, all veterans are invited to march in the 4th of July parade in Meeker. Meet at Eighth and Main before the start of the parade. It’s our goal to have every veteran in Meeker start the parade this year, no uniform required, just join us to lead the parade!
