‘Good weekend’ for MHS v-ball

MEEKER I The Delta Panthers came to Meeker last Thursday and went home with a loss at the hands of the Cowboys.

The Cowboys won in five, 24-18, 22-25, 25-12, 19-25 and 25-9.

“Another good weekend for Meeker High volleyball,” commented head coach Greg Cravens. “We played two very good teams this weekend.”

The Delta Panthers, who were undefeated when they came to Meeker, will be one of the top 3A Western Slope teams this year.

“Going five sets was a good experience for us,” said Cravens. “The girls need to know how good they can play when their backs are against the wall.”

Senior Grace Roberts said “the most important thing this year is all of us working together building each other up for those tough games. Our coaches have really pushed us to love each other on and off the court. As seniors, we are really pushing to have more confidence in each other and have faith that the next point is ours and to forgive our mistakes but also learn from it.”

The Cowboys struggled with the strong middle hitters of Delta, but once adjusted they defeated them in front of a packed home crowd.

“Meek Week” in Limon began Friday with volleyball, the Cowboys sealed another victory, sustaining their undefeated season by winning in four: 21-25, 25-13, 25-8, and 25-15.

“Our trip to Limon is always a good experience on and off the court,” said Cravens. “I get to spend good quality time with the freshman at the front of the bus for five hours. Yeah!”

After the bus ride, the varsity had trouble and dropped the first set, but then warmed up, they dominated the rest of the game.

“On the court, Limon also had good middle hitters and we had to be good defensively to be able to put the ball back at them,” commented Cravens. “I’m very pleased at where we are offensively; still averaging 15 points a set which is good for this time of the year.”

This weekend the Cowboys will travel to Vail Mountain on Friday before heading to a tournament at Denver Christian on Saturday.

“Next week is going to be a great test for us,” commented Cravens. “Vail Mountain is always a good test for us and then we go back down the hill to play in the Denver Christian Tournament which features four undefeated 2A teams all on the same side of the bracket. We start with Front Range Christian at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. We will have to be playing well this weekend.”

The tournament features Holyoke and Sedgwick County which met last year in the championships at the state tournament.
