I feel very fortunate to have a window over our kitchen sink that translates into an outside view of the world as I cook and prepare meals. It’s a comforting companion because cooking is primarily a solo event.
Today, the sky was just awesome with multiple colors of blue, purple and white clouds lighting up the pending sunset. Despite being extremely cold, the sun is shining and the snow looks beautiful. I can enjoy it all from the warmth of our kitchen. It is usually a soothing time of the day.
I admit I am very tired of looking at snow and ice non-stop. This winter is going on forever with a nary a warm day to melt our driveway back to pavement or the yard back to grass. Usually, we get a break from the cold for a day or two.
Looking out the window is an end-of-day contemplation while prepping dinner. I listen to NPR especially if they have interviews with book writers or music composers. Or, I hit Pandora for some tunes. If creative, I search for music from movies and recently listened to the soundtrack from “Jersey Boys” — peppy music from my high school days.
There have also been many days when I was frustrated and angry. Life doesn’t always go as we expect and others’ demands get in the way of the joys. But cooking can be a cure for the rough days too.
The kitchen windows of my life extend from my childhood home to our Denver house and now Meeker. They have told me many stories. Back in Indiana we looked for the red cardinals, the state bird. In Denver we watched the bison herd and traffic on I-70. Now I can see deer walk through our yard.
Today, I stand at my window with a heart full of thanks for the view and comfort.
