GUEST COLUMN: Pioneers Medical Center

As a pillar of our community, the Eastern Rio Blanco Health Service District is resolutely dedicated to providing outstanding healthcare and promoting economic vitality. We are grateful for the opportunity to address concerns and highlight our initiatives aimed at adapting to the changing needs of our patients and residents.

At PMC, our patients’ and residents’ health, safety, and well-being take precedence. Adhering to the stringent standards of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), we consistently refine our policies, training, and procedures to ensure that every patient receives respectful and dignified care. Each team member is committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality care within a safe and supportive setting. Our pursuit of excellence drives us to enhance patient outcomes through innovative medical practices, evidence-based treatments, and a culture of accountability.

PMC plays a crucial role in the local Meeker economy for several reasons. First, we are the largest employer in the county, currently providing jobs for 230 staff members. This employment supports the livelihoods of these individuals and their families and stimulates local spending, which is vital for other businesses in the area. This is particularly important in light of economic challenges, such as the declining employment rates in Rio Blanco County and the projected population decrease of 12% over the next 25 years due to shifts in the coal and oil sectors (Rio Blanco County Economic Update –Mesa University, 2024).

As the local economy faces these challenges, our goal is to provide stability and support for families and businesses, ultimately improving Meeker’s financial health. Our range of services draws thousands of individuals to our area annually. In 2024, our internal patient data revealed that a remarkable 47% of unique, unduplicated patients come from outside Meeker, which amounts to nearly 3,000 individuals choosing our services. Importantly, this number does not account for repeat visits, indicating a strong probability that these patients will return to receive care and likely shop, dine, and spend time in our community throughout the year.

Over the past two years, we have happily gifted our employees $80,000 in Meeker Chamber Bucks as a holiday bonus. This program keeps money flowing within our community, benefiting local businesses during the holiday season and throughout the quieter winter months. It highlights our commitment to supporting Meeker’s local businesses. Moreover, our wide range of services attracts individuals and businesses to our area, and we take pride in being a reliable healthcare provider and a catalyst for local economic resilience.

Another significant challenge is housing availability and the limitations on facility expansion. As our community grows, so does the demand for accessible and affordable housing, which is vital for our staff and community members. We are proactively exploring innovative solutions and building partnerships to address these challenges, recognizing that adequate housing is essential for the sustainability and health of our community.

Questions have also been raised regarding our hospital’s management company, Ovation Healthcare, previously known as QHR, particularly concerning misinformation about their intentions for PMC. Their primary goal is not to sell the hospital; they have managed it since 1997. Ovation has been in business for 48 years and supports hospitals across 47 states, focusing on aiding independent community hospitals and fostering sustainable rural healthcare. The organization advocates for a shared service model that allows rural hospitals to maintain decision-making autonomy while highlighting local care priorities. Their mission aims to enhance hospital revenue and reduce costs, evidenced by initiatives such as the Elevate Supply Chain program. Ovation’s clinical services team also provides expertise in various areas, including compliance and patient experience, ensuring exceptional clinical care.

As a result of these efforts, Ovation hospitals see 65% more cash on hand, capture an average market share of 15% higher, achieve 10% increased savings in the supply chain, and reduce average net days in accounts receivable by 25%.

In every decision we make, our unwavering focus is on protecting the health and safety of those we serve. We greatly appreciate the trust placed in us and remain committed to providing excellence in care, strengthening economic resilience, and working together to overcome challenges for a healthier, stronger future. Pioneers Medical Center will continue to lead the effort to improve the health and well-being of our community.
