Historical society welcomes traveling Smithsonian exhibit to museum

Special to the HT

MEEKER |  Community members gathered at the White River Museum last week to celebrate the opening of “Americans,” a Smithsonian traveling exhibit now on display in Meeker.

The May 15 reception and marked the beginning of several weeks of programming connected to the nationally recognized exhibition. “Americans” explores ideas of identity and examines the many ways Indigenous images, stories and experiences have shaped concepts of what it means to be American.

Meeker is one of only a handful of Colorado communities selected to host the exhibit through the Smithsonian Institution’s Museums on Main Street program in partnership with History Colorado. The exhibit is part of local Sesquisemiquincentennial celebrations recognizing the nation’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th anniversary.

The exhibit is open through July 5 and organizers plan to offer educational programs, speakers and community events throughout its stay.
