HISTORY LESSONS: Fish Duck

I am still waiting for history to repeat itself from this article published in February of 1890.

“The News of Meeker is responsible for this: Frank Barton of Meeker, Rio Blanco county, while out hunting the other day shot a fish duck. Nothing strange in this, but we doubt whether the sequel will ever be equalled. When Frank picked up the duck he found the tail of a fish protruding from its mouth. On pulling the fish out he found it measured eight inches in length, and was alive and kicking.”

This article was copied in at least five newspapers across Colorado: Field and Farm (Denver); The Idaho Springs News; The Denver Press; The Otero County Eagle; The Holyoke Enterprise; and The Rocky Mountain Sun (Aspen). According to birds-of-north-america.net, there are three types of Mergansers (Fish Ducks) in North America; C. Frank Barton was once mayor of Meeker. He left here about 1892 and moved on to Salmon City, Idaho to pursue mining interests.
