The Meeker girls’ basketball team knew they were headed into the weekend facing the number four ranked Grand Valley Cardinals and they took the challenge head on. For the week they had already beat Roaring Fork 57-50 and Olathe 51-39.
“The Grand Valley game was definitely challenging,” commented senior Ellie Hossack. “We came in knowing that they were going to be a tough team based on not only rankings but past years of playing.”
Hossack scored 46 points in the three game weekend, 18 of which fell during the Grand Valley game.
“As the game started everyone started to get hot with their shots and our teamwork was on a high,” said Hossack. “Sadly we fell short, yet we were all very proud of the way we played and how close we stuck with the Grand Valley team.”
The Cardinals remain undefeated but the Cowboys have stayed with them better than any other team so far this year.
Aisnley Selle had 38 points last week in the three games and 22 rebounds and currently leads the team in points per game, total points and blocks.
“Going into the game, we knew that Grand Valley was one of the best teams in the state, and we were excited to see how we competed with them,” commented Selle. “We played amazing and I personally couldn’t be prouder of how everyone came together and worked hard to shut down their offense and open up new plays. We believe we can compete with anyone in the state and that game proved it!”
Other stat leaders for the weekend was Rylee Sullivan with 23 points and 24 rebounds, Charlie Rogers with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Taylor Garcia with 10 rebounds.
“So far the season has been so fun,” said Hossack. “Everyday everyone shows up to practice ready to work. Watching everyone grow has been my favorite part. They truly are such amazing girls to play with. I am excited to see how the rest of the season plays out!”
This is another road weekend with games in Gunnison on Friday and Cedaredge on Saturday.
