MEEKER | For the past three years head coach Greg Cravens has successfully brought the Meeker Cowboys volleyball team to the Regional tournament. Last weekend, the Cowboys won all four games at their home-hosted league tournament. The Cowboys saw Vail Mountain and Vail Christian Friday and West Grand and Paonia on Saturday. They came out as the number one team of the tournament and will host regionals for the third year in a row as the number one team in the 2A Western Slope League.
With an undefeated league season, the Cowboys will enter regionals with a 12-0 win-loss record. The Cowboys have been winning most games in three sets.
This Saturday, the Cowboys will hold regionals here in Meeker. The matches will be up against Telluride and Sargent. Meeker sits at No. 5 in the 2A total state bracket, while Telluride is No. 23 and Sargent is No. 36 In the 2A state bracket. The first match will be Meeker against Sargent at 9 a.m., following those matches will be Telluride vs. Sargent then Meeker vs. Telluride. This weekend will determine placement for the state tournament that will happen next weekend in Denver at the Coliseum.
The Cowboys are sitting fifth in the state behind Wiggins No. 2, Union Colony Prep (Greeley) No. 3, Limon No. 2 and Denver Christian No. 1. This weekend will help the Cowboys hopefully move up a spot or two for the state tournament. The higher the ranking, the easier the games will be.
Last year, the Cowboys finished fifth at the state tournament. This year the hope is to play on Saturday night where this year’s team could make history in winning the first state volleyball title for Meeker. This is a possible result of going into state with an undefeated league season. Come support the Meeker Cowboys this Saturday at regionals.
