MEEKER | The lady Cowboys have started playing their league opponents for their second time, which means the season is over halfway complete.
In their previous matchup with the Grand Valley Cardinals, Meeker was mercy-ruled. While still losing, the game was much closer, final score of 44-50.
“The girls came out so incredibly ready for the game,” began head coach Jamie Rogers. “They were passing well, defending well, and they were competing. We have been talking about how everyone works hard but not everyone competes and they were having a hard time finding that. They all were competing.”
“Working on shot selection,” said Rogers. “We practiced a ton on this and you could really tell last weekend. We are not a big team and we are working on defense. How do we make ourselves bigger?”
Ainsley Selle led in both points and rebounds, with 13 and 11 respectively. Ellie Hossack had 10 points, Taylor Garcia had seven points and also 11 rebounds, and Reese Clatterbaugh had five points and five rebounds.
The Cowboys traveled to play the No. 17 ranked North Fork Miners Saturday.
“We were so cold and could not make a basket,” commented Rogers. “They were taking great shots, but couldn’t get them to go in, Charlie and Hossack would hit the rim and they would slide off.”
Final score was 28-38.
Selle was once again the top scorer with 14, and top in rebounds with 11; she was the only one to break double digit points. Clatterbaugh pulled down 10 rebounds and Rogers six.
They finished the weekend with a 3-9 record.
“The girls are coming on in their confidence,” commented Rogers. “Taylor saw some increased playing time, Brea Garcia hurt her ankle again, and Taylor had a breakout game and played so awesome against Grand Valley and played really well the next night against North Fork.
Clatterbaugh’s rebounds are amazing and Charlie and Rylee Sullivan are getting the ball up the court so well. Selle and Hossack shooting is great, with great shots and it is coming, they are almost there with the amount of points they are capable of scoring.”
This weekend the Cowboys will face off once again with the Olathe Pirates and Roaring Fork Rams. Hosting the Pirates on Friday, there will be JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys games only. Games will begin at 4 p.m.
“We are really excited to see Olathe again,” said Rogers. “Last time we did not play well and were in foul trouble, but our offense is working a lot better.”
Saturday the games will begin at 4 p.m., starting with JV at Carbondale.
