Lady Cowboys win three more

MEEKER | The lady Cowboys’ basketball team improved its record to 10-4 after winning three more games last week, including two Western Slope League contests. Meeker will host Paonia Friday, then play in DeBeque Saturday against the 1A Dragons.

Meeker needed overtime to beat the Little Snake Rattlers when they played in Baggs, Wyo. in January but they played together and bit the Rattlers 50-33 before pounding Caprock Academy 66-16, both in front of hometown fans. The lady Cowboys traveled to Hotchkiss last Saturday and won a hard-fought league game by two points (43-41) against the Bulldogs.

“The Snake River game was another game where the girls played well as a team,” Meeker head coach Jamie Rogers said. “They were shooting smooth and their defensive rotations were not allowing the Snake River girls very many open shots.”

Sophomore Julia Dinwiddie led her team with 16 points, six rebounds and she stole the ball five times. Junior Megan Shelton scored 13 points, including three three-point shots and she pulled down nine rebounds, while Gracie Bradfield scored five, Kirsten Brown and Kenzie Turner each added four and Tori Lasker made a free throw and recorded seven rebounds.

Nine varsity players scored in the 50-point rout of the Caprock Academy Eagles. Shelton finished with 10, Dinwiddie and Bradfield each had nine, Lasker finished with eight, Sierra Williams had seven, Matilda Brown scored six, while Brown, Riley Pertile and Karlee Nielsen, each added four.

The league game in Hotchkiss was not as easy, with Meeker trailing after the first quarter but coming back to take a one-point lead at halftime and an eight point lead into the fourth quarter.

“At Hotchkiss, we didn’t shoot as well from the outside and had some foul trouble,” Coach Rogers said. “It was a hard-fought game, where the girls had to really pull together and focus mentally.”

Lasker scored 14 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had six steals, while Shelton score four, recored 17 rebounds and finished with eight steals. Turner scored eight for her team, Bradfield finished with seven, while Dinwiddie and Brown both score five.

“Right now we are third in the league, with us and Rangely both having one loss but they get us in the head to head,” Coach Rogers said. “Soroco is first with no league losses.”
