RANGELY | The volleyball team closed out the weekend with solid wins on Friday and Saturday over South Park and Caprock respectively. On Friday, the Panthers won their match in three games: 25-16, 25-11 and 25-10 and turned around and closed out Caprock in three games on Saturday: 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12. The wins came after a tough road trip to Wyoming on Thursday where they faced the Little Snake River Rattlers from Baggs and lost in three games: 14-25, 21-25, 22-25. The JV team had similar results with wins over South Park and Caprock while losing at the hands of the Rattlers.
On the attack in the loss to the Rattlers, senior Marlena Miller had 11 kills while junior Hannah Wilkie had six kills. On the defensive side, Miller had eight blocks and freshman Aspen Lowe contributed three more. Senior Skylar Thacker came through with 13 digs while sophomore Kacie Lapp had 12 digs of her own. Senior Kassidy Brown fed the ball to the hitters and had 24 assists.
On the attack in the win over South Park, Miller had 11 kills while Wilkie and Lapp each had five. Helping out from the service line, Thacker had six aces, while senior Makenze Cochrane added three more. On the defensive side, Miller had seven blocks and Brown added two more. Thacker came through with 15 digs while Cochrane had 14 and Lapp had 11. Brown added 25 assists to her season total during the games as well.
On the attack in the win over Caprock, Miller had eight kills and Wilkie added six more. Helping out from the service line was Cochrane with five aces. On the defensive side, Miller had two blocks and Wilkie had three. Senior Skylar Thacker came through with 14 digs while Cochrane had six. Brown had 17 assists during the games.
The Panthers, who play in the Western Slope League, are now 5-2 and sit toward the top of the standings. Teams in the league include Meeker, West Grand, DeBeque, Vail Mountain, Paonia, Hotchkiss, Soroco, Plateau Valley, Vail Christian, North Park, Caprock and Hayden. Cross county rival Meeker is now 7-0 with a 3-1 win over Vail Mountain on Saturday. Hayden, now 4-2, won their most recent game over Little Snake River, 3-1. The Panthers’ next match is with Vail Christian and will be played in Rangely on Friday with games starting at 4 p.m.
