RANGELY | The RHS lady Panthers played Soroco on Friday. The team started out strong with freshman Mary Scoggins leading the way with six of eight points in the first quarter. Going into half the girls were down by 10 points, 13-23.
“We had closed the gap some, outscoring the Rams 12-8 in the third quarter, said head coach Jimmie Mergelman. “We were able to get the score to within five, but just couldn’t close the gap.”
Scoggins led the way with eight points followed by Thacker with seven, Cochrane and Wilkie with five each. Lapp with four and Miller added two.
“This was a good defense game holding the Rams to one of their lowest scoring games on the year,” Mergelman said.
On Saturday the team traveled to Hotchkiss.
“We did not come out ready and had a rough first half,” Mergelman said. Down 13-29 at the end of the half, the Panthers “had a great last 12 minutes.”
“With four left in the third quarter we were down 16-40, and came back within 10 points. We just ran out of time. We need to not dig ourselves such a big hole,” Mergelman said. The lady Panthers finished the game with a score of 58-43. Skylar Thacker led the way with 24 points, Cochrane added eight, Lapp with seven, and Wilkie, Miller and Adelynn Halcomb each added two points.
