RANGELY | Despite a busy week of Homecoming festivities, the Rangely Panthers cross country teams were able to buckle down for a great weekend of racing at the Moffat County Invitational.
In their last cross country meet of the season, Timothy Scoggins, Gabe Polley, Brent Cantrell, and Ashton Bennett performed very well. Cantrell and Bennett raced Friday as a part of the JV meet, turning in times of 31:17 and 32:45, respectively. Scoggins and Polley ran their final race Saturday in the varsity race, finishing the tough course in 23:24 and 24:56, respectively.
“The football players brought a lot of fun energy and will certainly be missed,” said head coach Beth Scoggins. “I am not sure if the clapping warm-ups will be the same without them.”
Also running on Friday were Justin Allred, Macy Morgan and Brooke Filfred. Morgan ran well, finishing in 33:40 with Filfred closing in 40:08. Allred also had a great race, pressing the whole way enroute to a finishing time of 24:49, improving his previous best time by over two minutes.
To continue the competitive weekend of racing, Mary Scoggins led the Lady Panthers with a strong start as she went out with the lead pack and stayed in it the whole way. Scoggins finished in 21:24 to place 5th in the varsity meet. Scoggins was joined by Dixie Rhea (26:49), Annika Cantrell (28:58), Rylee Allred (31:40), and Adelynn Halcomb (33:19) in her 5-kilometer efforts, as each runner performed very well.
Although they started in the second wave of runners, Andrew Dorris and Alex Black worked their way to the front of the race, passing some of the runners in the first wave along the way. They finished in 13th with a time of 19:42 and 16th in 20:00, respectively. Colton Noel was next in line for the Panthers, finishing in 20:40, with Fisher Widner (21:37), Kevin Wren (21:57), and Anthony Dorris (22:46) coming in shortly after.
The Panthers have just one regular season cross country meet left, scheduled to take place in Craig at the Yampa Valley Golf Course on Friday.
