LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: May 4, 2023

Thanks for great May Day event

Dear Editor,

We at the Rio Blanco County Historical Society would like to extend our greatest appreciation to everyone that helped with the planning, set up, and participation in our first ever May Day Festival event on April 30.

We want to thank Go-fer Foods for the donation to our homemade kettle corn, to all the lovely ladies that donated a delicious pie, to the members of the RBC Historical Society that assisted in setting up and running the event, and to Home.Made for the beautiful flowers for the May baskets. Thank you to Wendll’s, Chippers, ERBM Rec District, Craig Bowling Alley, and everyone else that loaned yard game items. A big thank you to Dawnine Squire and Nancy Richardson for donating their time to the face painting booth! Thank you to everyone who signed up for our first log chopping competition, purchased a pie, and enjoyed a freshly made kettle corn or cotton candy.

We had so much fun putting on this event for our community and we hope everyone that joined us had fun finally getting to enjoy the spring weather. Thank you for coming out and supporting the White River Museum, we hope to bring more events like this to the community to get people together and have a great time. Be on the lookout for more fun events in the very near future!

Thanks to Town for Wolf Creek partnership

Dear Editor,

On behalf of the Rio Blanco Water Conservancy District Board of Directors we would like to thank the trustees of the Town of Meeker for voting to become a Cooperating Agency for the review of the Wolf Creek Reservoir Project.

The BLM and the Army Corp of Engineers are entering into the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for the Wolf Creek Reservoir Project. The district has secured a water right decree from the State of Colorado; submitted our right-away application to the BLM; the joint review by the BLM and Army Corp has been decided; the third-party environmental contractors have been selected; and now we are entering into the refinement of the Purpose and Need Statement. The district is thrilled to have the County, Rangely, Meeker, and Yellow Jacket Water Conservancy District at the table actively involved together in this critical review process.

Questions about a county wide water augmentation plan, access points to the reservoir, evaporation, sales tax revenue from recreation, and countless other concerns are correct and welcome. These are the discussions, and at times passionate discussions, our community needs to have.

Again, we greatly appreciate the leadership at the Town of Meeker for stepping up and helping with the review of this critical infrastructure project. This is a major investment with benefits for all of Rio Blanco County. We are excited to have the Town of Meeker at the table.

Sincerely,
Tim Winkler, Board President
Rio Blanco Water Conservancy District

Correction:

The letter to the editor from the Rio Blanco Water Conservancy District in the May 4 edition was mistitled in stating the Town of Meeker “supports” the Wolf Creek Project. The Town’s official position is neutral at this time. The letter reflected the Town’s agreement with the Bureau of Land Management to be a “cooperating agency” along with 26 other entities in the Rio Blanco Water Storage Project, not the town adopting a position of support for the Wolf Creek Reservoir.
