LETTER TO THE EDITOR – July 31, 2025

First annual FUNdraising Games set for Aug. 8-9

Dear Editor:

For more than 30 years, Wendll’s has always been about the hoopla, cheering on the locals who support us all year, while promoting our local businesses, the great communities of Meeker and Rangely, along with the beautiful White River valley and we love competition!

We all compete everyday in some way and at Wendll’s and Wendll’s White River Roasters, (WWRR) we compete by trying to be different or as we like to promote, “uniquer.”

With this in mind and in an effort to sustainably promote our fresh Meeker air-roasted coffee brand and boost our coffee fundraising participation, in Rio Blanco County and beyond, we have created the Wendll’s White River Roasters’ FUNdraising Games and the MSG Ready Mix Sand Takedown Extravaganza.

To test our ideas, WWRR has donated $1,000 to the Meeker High School activities fund and teamed up with MHS activities director Klark Kindler, who has agreed to emcee the Aug. 8 (2-4 p.m.) event, as well as gather MHS athletic club members to help.

The MHS athletic clubs will divide and use the donated funds to help cover meals, camps and special equipment, for hosting the 10 games/competitions at Bob King Track at Starbuck Stadium.

The results of the friendly competition, will be recorded in the historic Rio Blanco Herald Times and online with our friends at Mile High Prep Report.

Keeping it simple, the games require minimal equipment, can be practiced anywhere and hopefully, easily duplicated in other communities by other schools or non-profit organizations, creating a competition, which could have the annual championships held in Meeker.

The 10 games are; 1) Most push ups and sit ups in 2:22, 2) 50-yard dash, 3) one-mile walk, 4) Fastest to make a layup, free throw and three-pointer, 5) Farthest, accurate throw of a baseball, 6) Farthest, accurate throw of a softball, 7) Farthest, accurate throw of a football, 8) Standing vertical jump, 9) Standing broad jump and 10) A new game: fling golf!

We also teamed up with Meeker High School girls wrestling coach Barney LeBlanc to raise funds for his program, with something new and fun: the MSG Ready Mix Sand Takedown Extravaganza (Aug. 9, 9-11 a.m.).

Dan Conrado said MSG Ready Mix are donating, delivering and picking up sand outside the RBC 4H Community Building, enough for four 20-foot rings for two hours of takedown fun in the sand for boys and girls.

Meeker Chamber Bucks will be used for prizes for boys and girls in four categories; elementary, middle and high school divisions, an adult division and overall champions. Champions in each division must compete in all 10 events, with the low score winning. Two-person and eight-person (boy and girl from each division) are being considered, if prize money can be generated.

Participation is included for a $10 entry fee for to the FUNdraising Games and $10 for the Sand Takedown Extravaganza, with all proceeds benefiting the MHS Activities Fund and the MHS girls wrestling program.

Participants can also order a bag(s) of our fresh Meeker air-roasted coffee during signup, for delivery the first week of school — proceeds benefiting the Meeker Band and Choir program, the first group to participate in our coffee fundraiser more than four years ago.

Several local businesses pitched in for Chamber Bucks for prizes and supporting the first-ever WWRR FUNdraising Games and MSG Ready Mix Sand Takedown Extravaganza by advertising in the commemorative program, which will be inserted in the Aug. 7, 2025 issue of the Rio Blanco Herald Times. Hope to see you all there!

Sincerely,

Bobby and Wendy Gutierrez
