Dear Editor:
There is plenty of interest in the District 3 County Commissioner race and it is good for the voters to have choices. So I am writing this letter to announce that I, Kai Turner, am running for Rio Blanco County Commissioner. I have put a lot of thought into this decision and take it very seriously. As I have roots that run deep on both ends of the county, the people, heritage and landscape of Rio Blanco County are very important to me.
I believe in making multiple use of our public lands and also in protecting our private property rights. We need to keep our Rio Blanco County tax rate as one of the lowest in the state to maintain our established industries and to help attract and recruit future ventures. I want to take advantage of our diverse skills and knowledge to collaborate from one end of the county to the other and create some new opportunities using our unique landscapes and natural resources.
There are numerous challenges facing rural Colorado, some specifically targeted to Rio Blanco County, threatening our way of life and crippling our economy. We cannot be absent from the table or turn a blind eye to these issues at the State and Federal level. I have seen the subtle erosion of our ability to make good local decisions for our rural independent way of life.
We need sound government efficiently providing services for the health and safety of our citizens without micromanaging the professionals.
I feel I’m approachable and willing to listen and have enjoyed positive results and endured consequences of some mistakes from my prior term some years ago, learning from both.
I have valuable experience and can navigate the hostile political environment that exists in Colorado and make a positive difference for the citizens of Rio Blanco County.
Thank you,
Kai Mark Turner
