Dear Editor:
I will vote for Sen. Don Coram to unseat Rep Lauren Boebert.
Don is currently serving as a senator for Colorado District 6 and will finish his term in January of 2023. Since 2011 he has been representing rural citizens in critical issues of agriculture, water, energy and health care. He has a lot of support and followers in his district and is also well known statewide.
Don Coram came to Meeker on May 21 and met and talked to interested citizens. He loves to visit Meeker.
Here are my personal reasons to promote Don Coram for Congress.
- I respect and like him as a person. He believes in building and maintaining relationships. He is very respectful and tolerant, and he displays the kindness and integrity I want to see in the person representing us in Washington, D.C. He is a listener. He is working for his constituents. He is not trying constantly to get attention with media grabbing statements hoping to drive up chat traffic in the social media echo chambers. Don Coram believes in religious freedom and tolerance, a founding belief of the United States of America. He believes in telling the truth, not half of the truth. Don plays it all by the rules and his spouse is not receiving many thousands of dollars as consultant fees paid by industrial companies.
- He is very supportive of the energy industry. He very much feels the pain when jobs are lost in the oilfield and coal mines. He acknowledges the impact of humans on our natural environment. He embraces cost-effective renewable energy production. Western Colorado is a critical supplier of hydrocarbons. As we grow our renewable energies, drilling for oil and gas and producing coal will have to happen for the foreseeable future. Only a reliable and affordable supply of energy will guarantee prosperity.
- Don is strongly supported by medical professionals like me. He completely understands that access to affordable, quality health care is shared by most of us living in rural areas. He understands the dismal state of mental health care in all of Colorado. He understands that health care is one of the top three industries in rural Colorado and that the growth in that industry will create new and better paying jobs. Pioneers Hospital in Meeker is a prime example for this concept. Don told me that he is anxious to tour Pioneers during his next visit to Meeker.
- Growing up on a ranch in Montrose was a life-shaping education for him. He learned about livestock and found his love for horses. He learned about running a business successfully and learned about disappointments when crops failed, or markets disappeared. He knows a lot about water and has been a fierce advocate of water rights and believes in expanding high country water storage and holding our ground as the thirsty large cities are eyeing the agricultural waters. Don always has an ear for agriculture, farmers, and ranchers alike. He wants to fight for the multiple use of the public lands and understands the benefits and responsibilities of all users. He understands the sportsmen and our concerns about the wolf release.
In closure, Don Coram is deeply troubled by the attitude of politicians about pushing intolerant and radical views, promoting unfounded, unproven, unverified accusations, and trying to divide us. As people and as a country we are facing real challenges and problems. We are voting for the best leaders and the best concepts. Don Coram agrees that we have a rock-solid democratic process, and we need to protect that process and protect our right to vote and have our vote counted. We all believe in the second amendment and the right to own firearms. However, ballots, not bullets, must be the way we settle disputes.
Just tearing down, destroying, and not offering solutions is not acceptable. Branding members of other parties as enemies and promoting hateful and derogative language will not build a better future. Kindness matters and dialogue with your supporters and those who disagree is essential. Finding solutions by forming compromises is called wisdom. In the end, successful societies are thriving on compromise.
