Thank you for Memorial Day participation

Dear Editor,

As the oldest veteran in attendance at the Memorial Day ceremonies in Meeker, I would like to thank  the following: Terry, DeeAnn, Ty and Reed; the Meeker VFW Post 5843 and Auxiliary; American Legion Post 74, and everyone else involved. It was truly an honor as a Korean War veteran to be asked to participate in deploying the ceremonial wreath into the White River and the following events on the 10th Street Bridge and at the Meeker Cemetery. I would also like to send a special thank you to all of the spectators who came up thanking me and handshakes too numerous to count. This was a day I will not soon forget.

Sincerely,

Joe Goedert

Poppy fundraiser success

Dear Editor,

On Friday, May 26, I sat at a table in front of the Post Office tending the Poppies that the VFW distributes as fundraiser for our post relief fund. During the roughly five hours I was there the generous citizens deposited nearly $500 to our cause.

Allow me to say “Thank You!” as you have earned at least that much. Thank God for people who care.

Remember the real reason

Dear Editor,

To the citizens of Meeker: I went to both VFW bridge dedications and the ceremony at the cemetery to honor veterans who have passed. I was disappointed to see such a small turnout, especially considering the number of people who live in Meeker. This holiday is to honor all deceased veterans whether they died in battle or not. Each of them enlisted and served their country. So while you are enjoying your barbecue, beer, soda remember the real reason you have the day off.
