Reminders of Christmas this season
Dear Editor:
Romans 1:16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
Three special reminders of this verse at this Christmas season were noted this weekend:
First, at a basketball game during the warm-up shooting around with both teams on the court and as the stands were filling, I saw one player go to the center of the court, kneel down obviously in prayer.
I sat quietly and observed. The players on both teams seemingly did not notice but continued their shoot around. The coaches were in conference with others at the sidelines while large numbers of persons entered the gymnasium. A couple of minutes later he got up and joined his team. It was the most significant moment of the tournament!
Second, following a potluck lunch I noticed one man filling take home containers with food. A few hours later I spoke with a person who had not been able to be in attendance and he expressed thanks for the food brought to him from a friend who had missed him in church and the fellowship feast.
Third was the impressive “A Sterling Christmas” presentation by The Meeker Community Choir at the beautiful festive decorated White River Methodist Church. What a blessing to be part of the story of Christmas presented in music. Thank you to everyone involved.
“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” ~ Isaiah 9:6-7

Thanks from the Purkey family
Dear Editor:
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the community of Meeker for all of the love and support we’ve received since John’s sudden passing on Dec. 2—from the emergency personnel and hospital staff who were there for us in the beginning to all of the organizations and individuals who have been there for us since that day.
Until John’s passing, I don’t think we fully realized the impact he had on so many people over the course of his life. We loved him dearly, and the amazing love, support and help we have received since his passing have been such a comfort to us in our grief.
Having so many of you with us on Dec. 9 to say goodbye was a beautiful way to honor his life, and would not have been possible without the help of: The Church at Meeker, White River Electric Association, HopeWest Meeker, Chapter BA of the P.E.O., Purkey Packing Plant, Stan and Vicki Crawford, Ma Famiglia, Mountain Charisma, The Herald Times, and many other kind-hearted individuals and families. To everyone who has shown up for us, and for all of the unspoken prayers and thoughtful gestures—thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Samme Purkey and family
Meeker
