This time of year has always been a favorite of mine. The leaves in their annual last gasp to show their true colors: red, orange and yellow. The end of fall never has conveyed sadness to us winter lovers. Most of us in that category look forward to all four seasons for different reasons, I am sure, but those of us who enjoy being outdoors and are truly avid weather watchers anticipate the feeling of change that is sure to come.
It is a different story in presidential years. The political climate this year portends doom and gloom for our democratic process once more. It has never felt quite so ominous. The neck and neck race feels threatening to exactly half of us, no matter one’s political views. The divisiveness spilling over into everyday life has been growing for years now.
“What is the worst thing that could happen?” is often a question posed by therapists to help relieve anxiety-ridden patients. It seems that this election is causing quite a few folks lots of anxiety, yet asking that question wouldn’t help much at all. Both political parties are painting an unbelievably grim picture.
Coming up with a solution for changing one’s reaction to the political “hot mess” facing us this year is important. One’s ability to wade through all of the proposed amendments to the Constitution relies on keeping a level head. The necessity of becoming more knowledgeable about the issues means that we all should give more than a glance to the material, even though it presents a challenge. Staying calm and pressing on, no matter what the outcome, is essential. Our country has had its ups and down keeping our democracy healthy and relatively happy over all these years. Let’s keep it that way. Cast your vote!
