MEEKER | The Meeker School District Re-1 Board of Education held its regular January meeting Monday, Jan. 26, with all members present. The board recognized student achievements, reviewed financial reports and addressed policy and budget items.
The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Vice President Tom Allen, followed by approval of the agenda.
Student achievements included recognition of the Meeker High School art program. Meeker Elementary fourth-grader Ari Theos received a Grand Champion award at the National Western Stock Show Art Competition for a landscape piece, earning a buckle and professional mounting. Barone Middle School eighth-grader Alise Massey also earned a Grand Champion award statewide for her mountain bird drawing.
There were no public comments.
Superintendent Chris Selle presented a District Advisory Committee report, outlining the committee’s statutory role in budget recommendations, oversight of the Unified Improvement Plan, assessment input tied to teacher evaluations, and guidance on student conduct policies. The committee also emphasized parent and community engagement through READ plans, ICAPs and district outreach efforts.
Meeker Elementary Principal Shana Holliday said Early Literacy Grant work was temporarily delayed due to a postponed virtual meeting. She reported that fourth- and fifth-grade teachers selected a new English language arts curriculum, MyView, and that midyear MAPS and DIBELS assessments indicate students are on track to meet end-of-year goals.
Barone Middle School Principal Dr. Atwell reported that 14 students will advance to the MathCounts regional competition Feb. 7 in Grand Junction, coached by Meeker High School students Tucker Chinn and Said Rodriguez. He also highlighted the schoolwide “Cowboy R-Factor” initiative and noted that more than half of the student body was recognized for attendance and academic achievement.
Meeker High School Principal Amy Chinn said the school is current on required fire and lockdown drills and reported the Empty Bowls fundraiser raised about $3,000 for Meals on Wheels. She said 23 students completed the first semester with perfect attendance and noted graduation is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 23.
During his superintendent’s report, Selle reviewed enrollment, staffing and district operations and raised concerns that proposed funding changes from the governor’s office could reduce school revenue despite claims of full funding.
The board reviewed financial reports, including projected deficit spending in some funds, and accepted resignations from Rachel Todd, Kristin Higgins and Kathleen Kelley. Members approved middle school volunteer wrestling coaches Matt Gurule, Clea Steerman, Barny LeBlanc, Kelly LeBlanc, Noah LeBlanc, Ben Quinn, Tyrell Turner and Kurtis Blunt.
The board unanimously approved the final FY26 budget, the appropriation resolution and a resolution to spend from the fund balance. The board reviewed the facility use, discussed a school resource officer partnership with the Town of Meeker, and received updates on personnel and capital projects.
The meeting concluded without an executive session. The next board work session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at the district office.
