Meeker celebrates Homecoming week

MEEKER | This has been Homecoming week at Meeker High School, organized by the MHS Student Council. Prior to today activities have included a junior varsity football game vs. Coal Ridge High School and the annual Powder Puff (women’s) intramural football game pitting the senior and sophomore girls against the junior and freshmen girls on Monday. The latter was, rather humorously, called by senior Jacob Pelloni who seemed a bit biased toward his senior classmates. It is rumored that the junior-freshmen team won behind the athletic play of quarterback Megan Shelton.
Tuesday, the junior varsity and varsity softball teams played Basalt while the JV and varsity volleyball teams played at Rangely. Last night brought the always popular Peach Fuzz volleyball game with the high school boys playing against each other dressed as women.
Thursday there will be three volleyball games: C team, JV and varsity at West Grand High School at 5, 6, and 7 p.m. Tonight will be the grand bonfire rally at the fairgrounds.
Friday’s Homecoming activities start with the athletic department barbecue at the courthouse at 11 a.m., followed by the Homecoming parade at 1 p.m. The student council is proud to salute custodians Brent Rowles, Russell McClain and Victor Saenz as this year’s parade marshals. The parade will be followed by the usual pep rally on the courthouse lawn.
Friday’s athletic events include double-header varsity softball games vs. Delta at 3 and 5 p.m. The three volleyball teams will play Plateau Valley in games at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. the Homecoming football contest against Monte Vista will begin. The cross country team will compete in the Anna Banana Memorial Wildcat Invitational meet at Fruita High School beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday.
Homecoming King, Queen and attendants will be crowned during halftime at the football game. Each class at the high school nominates two girls and two boys for this honor. This year, the class nominees are: Freshman—Cleone McPherson, daughter of Michael McPherson; and Greg Jones, son of Amy Dupire and Phil Jones; Mariah Hood, daughter of Jennifer and Keith Hood; and Grant Cravens, son of Rebekah and Greg Cravens. Sophomore—Kirsten Brown, daughter of Denise and Chip Brown; Phil Arnold, son of Priscilla Sheridan; Julia Dinwiddie, daughter of Karen and Mike Dinwiddie; and Nick Massey, son of Mary Cunningham and Stuart Massey. Junior—Gracie Bradfield, daughter of Marnell and Wade Bradfield; Pake Burke, son of Heather and K.C. Burke; Mikayla Cardile, daughter of Laura and Joseph Cardile; and Saikumar Kallepelly of India, exchange student guest of the Portwood Family. Senior—Abbey Morgan, daughter of Michele Morgan and Regas Halandras; Victor Varela, son of Veronica Varela and Juan Carlos Ruiz; Maddie Kummer, daughter of Kim and Jeff Kummer; and Zach Dinwiddie, son of Karen and Mike Dinwiddie.
Student Council sponsor Kathleen Kelley told the Herald Times, “It’s already looking like a great Homecoming week for Meeker High School. We certainly hope as many as can do show up to support the rallies, the parade, and to cheer on all the various teams.”
