MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboy varsity baseball team won two games last week, including a comeback win against Grand Valley in front of a home crowd.
Meanwhie, the Meeker junior varsity team remained undefeated after three wins last weekend.
Meeker played in Craig on Tuesday and they will host the state’s No. 1-ranked 2A team, the Paonia Eagles, on Friday, with the first game scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Paintbrush Park.
“We beat Grand Valley 6-5, with a seventh-inning rally, including a clutch hit by Uri Goedert and ending with a walk-off RBI double by Logan Hughes,” Meeker head baseball coach Brian Merrifield said.
Garrett Frantz started on the mound for the Cowboys against the Grand Valley Cardinals and Eli Hanks came in as relief and earned the win.
Meeker’s junior varsity team also beat the Cardinals 11-3 behind Goedert and Trapper Merrifield’s pitching.
The JV Cowboys also played a game Friday against Rifle and won 12-2, this time with Luis Villalpando and Cooper Meszaros pitching for the Cowboys at home.
The Cowboys played at home three days in a row, hosting the Aspen Skiers on a windy Saturday at Paintbrush Park. The Cowboys swept the Skiers, winning the varsity game 11-3 and the junior varsity team won its game, too.
“Our defense was solid with only one error and another perfect day in centerfield from Doak Mantle, with two catches in tough conditions,” coach Merrifield said.
Coach Merrifield said Hughes picked up the win against Aspen, with Ty Gibson catching for Meeker’s ace.
“Doak, Hunter (Garcia) and Trapper all pitched well in the JV game,” coach Merrifield said of the 12-9 win.
Meeker’s varsity team is currently 5-7 and the junior varsity team is currently undefeated at 6-0.
