MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ basketball team will host the annual White River Electric Cowboy Shootout, which started last night with Meeker playing Hayden at 7:30 p.m. to open the 2014/2015 basketball season.
The Meeker girls are the defending Western Slope League and regional champions, finishing last season with a 23-3 record and placing third in the 2014 Colorado basketball championships.
“Our look will be a little different this year,” head coach Greg Chintala said. “I look at it as the same program, just a different bullet.”
Twenty-three girls are out for the team, which will be led by seniors Sydney Hughes, Jamie McLaughlin and Megan Parker. Meeker also returns Jenna Walsh and Reece Pertile, both with varsity experience.
The WREA Cowboy Shootout features both Rio Blanco County teams, Nucla, South Routt County (Soroco), Hayden and Caprock.
The Cowboy girls are also the defending champs of the Shootout.
“I feel we will be ready to play,” Chintala said. “The girls will come and battle every night, just like always.”
