Meeker Marlins teams compete in Eagle championship

Mason Allen, 11-12 year old boys 25 backstroke. Allen placed ninth, teammates Landin Lopez and Gabe Smithers placed third and 11th respectively.

MEEKER I The Meeker Marlins swimming program consists of two teams, a competitive league sanctioned through USA Swimming.org and the High Country League. Last Friday both teams traveled together to Eagle, Colo., for the 2018 championship swim meet. All of the USA swimmers were extremely excited to be back in a very familiar pool where they began their swimming careers, and to be swimming with their friends on the High Country League team.

This was the third and final meet for the High Country League swimmers. They have been practicing since May, swimming three times a week, focusing on strokes, turns and starts.
The High Country swimmers are led by head coach Shelly Rogers and assistant coaches Jeni Kincher and Chance Walker.
“Swimming is a sport like no other,” said Rogers, “the kids gain tremendous overall strength and endurance, swimming 500 yards in practice is similar to running a mile on land.”
The USA swimmers swam 12,200 yards last week during practice in preparation for their final meet, the seasonal state championships in Colorado Springs Aug. 3-5 at Pike’s Peak Athletics Training Center.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
