Meeker Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony continues a tradition of honor and remembrance

Special to the HT

MEEKER | For generations, the veterans of Meeker have gathered on Memorial Day to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Long before many of us were born, local veterans stood together at the cemetery and along the banks of the White River to remember friends, family members, neighbors, and fellow service members who never made it home. That tradition continues today with the annual Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony at the Meeker Town Park Bridge.

For more than 30 years, veterans, community members, and young volunteers have gathered at the bridge to place a wreath into the flowing water as a symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and enduring gratitude. The ceremony serves as a quiet but powerful reminder that freedom has never been free and that those who gave everything for our country must never be forgotten.

One of the most meaningful parts of the ceremony is the connection between generations. Veterans stand beside children and young adults, passing on the responsibility to remember and honor those who served. In a small town like Meeker, where community and tradition matter deeply, these moments help preserve the stories and sacrifices that shaped both our nation and our community.

The wreath itself carries special meaning. Made from evergreens to symbolize endurance and eternal remembrance, its circular shape represents everlasting honor and the unbroken bond between the living and the fallen. The red bow stands for the sacrifice made by America’s heroes. Each year, the wreath is lovingly created by Bobbie Jean, whose dedication helps make the ceremony especially personal and meaningful.

As names are spoken aloud and the wreath is released into the water, the ceremony becomes more than a tradition. It becomes a promise — that those who served and sacrificed for our freedoms are gone, but never forgotten.

The community is invited to attend the Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Meeker Town Park Bridge, located at 427 Water St. and then up to the cemetery for a memorial and gathering. All are encouraged to come together in remembrance, gratitude and respect for our nation’s fallen heroes.
