The board of the Meeker RE-1 school district met Dec. 12 for the last regular meeting of the calendar year. Board members Hanna Borchard, Ann Franklin and Kevin Amack said they were impressed by the students who participated in mock interviews in December.
Meeker kindergarten teacher Laura Koenig was recognized for completion of her masters’ degree in mathematics education.
A donation of funds from the Fairfield Trust committee will be used to replace English language curricula that is expiring, as well as some science curricula, and some of the funds may be used for “parts and pieces” of the greenhouse project at the high school. “The English curricula is the first priority and it’s expensive,” said Superintendent Chris Selle.
Board members were updated on the mill levy process. The total program mill levy is “frozen” at 5.76 mills, Selle explained, adding, “We could be entirely locally funded, but because of Tabor and the School Finance Act we are dependent on the state.”
Bonds taken out for the elementary school and the high school are expected to be paid in full by 2026 for the former and 2035 for the latter.
The board approved the mill levy for 2023, approved a bid for the HVAC project at Barone Middle School, and accepted the results of the annual financial audit for the district. The accounting firm conducting the audit stated, “We found the books and records to be in excellent working order. The balance sheet accounts were reconciled, year-end adjustments were properly recorded, financial statement revenues and expenses were properly classified and all transactions were adequately explained.”
