Cure spring fever with these fun area events

With spring playing peekaboo with Northwestern Colorado, perhaps you, like me, have been itching to hit the road for a day or a weekend. Inspired by that craving I have put together a little guide of happenings you may want to plan an adventure around.

Friday, May 5: Cinco De Mayo Festival at the Garfield County Fairgrounds Arena

This event will be held from 4-8 p.m, and facilitates competition in food, drink, dance, music and merchandise, while allowing the public to enjoy it all. Children 10 or under are free, students with an ID are $5, and adults cost $10. For more information scan the Cinco De Mayo Festival QR code below or visit coloradorivervalleychamber.com

Saturday, May 6: Venture Sports hosts the Bighorn Gravel Recon Ride #1 and #2 in Gypsum, Colorado

Starting and ending at the Gypsum Rec Center, this “scenic spin” is planned to be somewhat casual, but still covers technical terrain, which includes steep pitches and some singletrack (38mm+ tires are recommended). This is a free event with both nutrition and hydration provided by The Feed. Riders will depart from 52 Lundgren Boulevard (the Rec Center), in Gypsum at 10 a.m.

Riders will have two options: Recon Ride #1, a ride that will cover approximately 50-miles starting at the beginning of the Ram’s Horn Escape 85-mile race route. With 4,500 feet of climbing and a 17-mile descent back into town, this reporter is not interested but I’m sure a lot of people are jazzed at the idea. The Recon Ride #2 will be approximately 30-miles and will include portions of the Little Bighorn 50-mile course. On this route riders will climb around 2,800 feet and also have a 17 mile descent back into town. For more information on this event scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for the name of this event.

Thursday, May 11: Steamboat Backcountry Backpacking Basics with Carly Moree

This event is being held at Mountain Tap Brewery, located at 910 Yampa St. #103 Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This workshop starts at 5:30 p.m., costs $20, and will teach anyone new to overnight trips exactly what they need and need to know for their adventures. For more information on this event scan the Eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for the name of this event.

Thursday, May 11: Delta Brews & Bites

This is being held in honor of the new MOD Express! This is a new public transportation route connecting Montrose, Olathe and Delta. The event will be held from 5pm to 8pm, at The Grove, 1970 South Main Street Delta, CO. Attendees will enjoy live music, food trucks, and both beer and wine tastings. Tickets for this event cost $20. For more information on this event scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for the name of this event.

Friday, May 12: Bay Equity Home Loans and Bank of Colorado host Roaring Forks, Corks & Kegs.

This event runs from 6-9 p.m. beginning at Hotel Colorado, 526 Pine St., Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Foodies and beverage enthusiasts will feel full after this social night spent enjoying samples from some of Glenwood Springs best restaurants, breweries, and wineries. Participating in this evening costs $55+. For more information on this event scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for the name of this event.

Wednesday, May 17: Gravity Haus will be hosting Mountain Bike Maintenance Skills and Ride at Howelsen Hill at 7 p.m.

This is located at Howelsen Parkway in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. For more information on this event scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for the name of this event.

Music:

If you are looking for music, you have a lot of options and could easily fill your May schedule with shows alone.

Steve’s Guitars, located at 19 N 4th Street Carbondale, Colorado, is a staple music venue in Carbondale, and has a few shows in May. For more information on this event scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com and search for “Steve’s Guitars.”

The Mesa Theater, located at 538 Main St. Grand Junction, CO has a full lineup of shows to browse through. For more information on upcoming shows scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for “Mesa Theater.”

The Warehouse25sixty-five Kitchen + Bar, located at 2565 American Way, Grand Junction, Colorado, is a more modern music and food venue with a strong lineup of musicians through May as well. For more information on upcoming shows scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for “Warehouse25sixty-five Kitchen + Bar.”

The Avalon Theatre, located at 645 Main St., Grand Junction, Colorado, has a more contemporary line of shows through May. For more information scan the Avalon QR code or visit avalontheatregj.com

Now if you want to head north, Schmiggity’s, located at 821 Lincoln Ave., Steamboat Springs, Colorado, always has a fun atmosphere and lineup. For more information on upcoming shows scan the eventbrite QR code, or visit eventbrite.com, and search for “Schmiggity’s.”

Clearly there is plenty to do out of town to shake things up a bit, but don’t forget, May 20 is our local RBC Golf Association Two Man Scramble Golf Tournament at the Meeker Golf Course. Hopefully this list of events has inspired you to add a few things to your calendar, but if it has just reminded you why you love our quiet community that is great, too!
