With spring playing peekaboo with Northwestern Colorado, perhaps you, like me, have been itching to hit the road for a day or a weekend. Inspired by that craving I have put together a little guide of happenings you may want to plan an adventure around.
Friday, May 5: Cinco De Mayo Festival at the Garfield County Fairgrounds Arena
This event will be held from 4-8 p.m, and facilitates competition in food, drink, dance, music and merchandise, while allowing the public to enjoy it all. Children 10 or under are free, students with an ID are $5, and adults cost $10. For more information scan the Cinco De Mayo Festival QR code below or visit coloradorivervalleychamber.com
Saturday, May 6: Venture Sports hosts the Bighorn Gravel Recon Ride #1 and #2 in Gypsum, Colorado
Starting and ending at the Gypsum Rec Center, this “scenic spin” is planned to be somewhat casual, but still covers technical terrain, which includes steep pitches and some singletrack (38mm+ tires are recommended). This is a free event with both nutrition and hydration provided by The Feed. Riders will depart from 52 Lundgren Boulevard (the Rec Center), in Gypsum at 10 a.m.
Riders will have two options: Recon Ride #1, a ride that will cover approximately 50-miles starting at the beginning of the Ram’s Horn Escape 85-mile race route. With 4,500 feet of climbing and a 17-mile descent back into town, this reporter is not interested but I’m sure a lot of people are jazzed at the idea. The Recon Ride #2 will be approximately 30-miles and will include portions of the Little Bighorn 50-mile course. On this route riders will climb around 2,800 feet and also have a 17 mile descent back into town. Clearly there is plenty to do out of town to shake things up a bit, but don’t forget, May 20 is our local RBC Golf Association Two Man Scramble Golf Tournament at the Meeker Golf Course. Hopefully this list of events has inspired you to add a few things to your calendar, but if it has just reminded you why you love our quiet community that is great, too!
