Meeker trustees approve support for Skijor

MEEKER | The Town Shop on Third Street has received a new paint job, giving a fresh look to the building and bringing it up to date with the bulk water load-out across the street that was also updated recently.

Meeker’s Board of Trustees met Tuesday, Aug. 20 for their regular meeting following a joint work session with the Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District board.

Staff updates included Public Works Superintendent Tobey Willey’s report on the completion of an upgrade to the Town Shop on Third Street and Cory Cox coming on board as a new employee. Police Chief Eddie Thompson was not present at the meeting, as he is completing his third and final session of FBI leader training. Melissa Fellows began training for her role as code enforcement officer on Aug. 19. Community Development Director/Town Planner Carly Thomson provided an update on activity in housing. Real estate transactions and building permits are down from 2023.

The board conducted a public hearing to review an application from Bruce Clatterbaugh to install a septic system on property that is within the Meeker Watershed Protection District. Clatterbaugh initially sought a permit for a vault and haul system for the property, which is just south of CR 4 and 900 feet from the White River. The new design would add a septic system and subsequent drainfield to the existing system. Following discussion, trustees approved the permit.

Trustees approved an ordinance to amend the 2024 budget to reflect additional revenue received that were unanticipated at the time of budget approval, primarily grant funding.

The board also heard a request for a $5,000 donation to Meeker Skijor. This year will be the event’s fifth anniversary, held on Jan. 4-5. Trustees approved a $7,000 donation to assist with the event, which brings in visitors and competitors from around the area.

The board heard updates on the housing action plan and the Circle Park and Riverfront project, the proposed temporary artificial ice rink at the basketball court on the courthouse plaza, and the status on the highway banner that had to be removed because the poles were moving.
