MEEKER | Meeker’s volleyball team won their pool in the district tournament held last weekend in Parachute and will advance to the state-qualifying, Regional tournament held this Saturday in Paonia. Meeker defeated Hayden and Vail Christian to win their pool last Friday at Grand Valley High School, then lost to West Grand and Paonia to become the No. 3 seed in Saturday’s regional tournament, which will also include the host Eagles and the Ridgeway Demons. Meeker defeated Hayden in three games, 25-8, 25-18 and 25-11 but needed four games to beat the Vail Christian Saints, after winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17 before losing the third game 25-12 but coming back to win the match and the pool with a 25-16 victory in the fourth game. Meeker lost to West Grand in three games (25-17, 25-14 and 25-16) and Paonia beat both Meeker and West Grand to win the tournament and the No. 1 seed, with a 21-2 record. The lady Cowboys lost the first game to the Eagles 25-10, but made it closer in the second, losing 25-19 before taking the league champions into overtime with a 25-27 loss in the third game. Meeker will get another opportunity against the Eagles as they will play them at 10 a.m. Saturday. Meeker will then play the No. 2 seeded Ridgeway Demons (19-2) from the San Juan Basin League at 11:30 a.m. The winner of each regional tournament will advance to the 2016 2A Colorado State Volleyball Championships.
