With help from Meeker Elementary School, preschool through 5th grade students were given the opportunity to learn about snow clearing operations and safety around equipment from Town of Meeker Public Works employees Tobey Willey and Levi Dinwiddie. Meeker Police Officer Jim Amick talked with the student about safely playing outside during the winter and in the snow. Public Works Director Willey reminded students of a simple rule “if you cannot see the snowplow operator, they cannot see you” further explaining to the students to play in the snow and build forts far away from roadways. As a conclusion students cast votes for their favorite name for six pieces of snow clearing equipment. This year’s Snow Squad consists of “Slush Puppy”, “Scoop-Dog”, “Taylor Drift” all dump trucks, “Snowzilla” a truck, “Darth Blader” a motor grader, and “Baby Snowda” a skidsteer.
With over 20 miles of roads to maintain, Town Administrator Mandi Etheridge stated that “the safety of our residents and our Public Works crew is our top priority and we appreciate residents keeping the street in front of their property clear so that we can plow the streets safely and more efficiently.” Town of Meeker residents are reminded of the following to help with snow clearing operations:
· Remove any obstructions from streets and cul-de-sacs such as trailers, basketball hoops and seldom used vehicles.
· Citations may be issued for vehicles and trailers left in the street 72 hours after a written warning is given.
The Town of Meeker is grateful for the opportunity to educate students about our snowplow operations, winter safety and essential services that are provided to the community. CARLY THOMSON PHOTO
