Merriam receives statewide award as EMS provider

SPECIAL TO THE HT

MEEKER | Rio Blanco Fire Rescue’s Deby Merriam has been named the 2025 BLS EMS Professional of the Year by the Emergency Medical Services Association of Colorado, an honor recognizing exceptional service, leadership, and dedication to emergency medical care.

The statewide award is presented annually to an EMS provider whose actions and contributions exemplify excellence in prehospital care. Colleagues say Merriam defines that standard.

A steady presence in Rio Blanco County’s EMS system for decades, Merriam is known for her calm under pressure, clinical skill, and compassionate care. Whether responding to a routine transport or a critical emergency, she brings professionalism, grace, and an unwavering commitment to her patients.

Her influence extends well beyond the calls she runs. Merriam is regarded as a mentor and role model for new providers, sharing her knowledge freely and helping strengthen the next generation of EMS professionals. Her leadership and willingness to teach have been instrumental in building a resilient and well-trained team.

Merriam is also recognized for her deep commitment to the community. In a small, rural region where EMS resources are often stretched thin, she has devoted countless hours to ensuring residents receive reliable, compassionate care. Colleagues say she routinely goes above and beyond—checking in on families after emergencies and offering quiet support long after the call is over.

The award underscores what many in Rio Blanco County have long known: Merriam’s service and spirit embody the best of emergency medical care in Colorado.
