MHS Cowboys defeat Dragons, tame Wildcats

MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys basketball team used scoring production from 13 different players on Friday night to defeat the Debeque Dragons in Debeque 77-44. The next afternoon Meeker took up where they left off as 11 players lit up the scoreboard in a 69-22 mauling of the North Park Wildcats.
Friday in Debeque Meeker had little trouble jumping out to a quick lead against the hometown Dragons. Cooper Smith scorched the nets for 12 of his team high 22 points as Meeker commanded the first quarter 24-9. The Cowboys continued to pull away from the Dragons in the second period outscoring them 17-11 and taking control of the game with a 41-21 halftime lead. Meeker’s consistent scoring in the third and fourth quarters couldn’t be matched by the Dragons. The Cowboys led 59-32 at the end of the third period and finished with a decisive 77-44 victory. Besides Smith’s 22 points, Trey Morris counted for 10, and Kevin Eli put up nine more for the ‘Pokes.
A long trip to Walden resulted in the Cowboys’ fourth consecutive conference victory without a loss. North Park was overmatched from the outset as Meeker dominated the offensive output, and stonewalled the Wildcats efforts to counter. Gable Smith came out on fire in the first quarter as he buried three long range bombs to pace a 20-point first quarter for the Cowboys. Scott Smith picked up the scoring parade in the second as he accounted for the team high in the period with six points. Meeker had an insurmountable 42-16 lead at half against the host ‘Cats. Although they slowed the point output down slightly in the third and fourth quarters, the Cowboys kept up their tenacious defense and only allowed North Park to score two points in the third quarter, and four points in the fourth. The final score was a relatively easy Meeker victory 69-22. Gable Smith led all scorers in the game with 14, followed by Scott Smith with 12.
Apologies to Jeremy Musgrave for last week’s misnomer, Jeremy again provided quality minutes for the Cowboys both Friday and Saturday scoring six and three points respectively.
