MEEKER | Meeker High School softball began practicing in early August and has its first competition this weekend.
“The Meeker High School softball team is very excited to kick off the 2023 season this Saturday, August 19th against Palisade,” commented head coach Kendal Bergman.
Bergman will be assisted by Kelsey Stroud and volunteers Anne Baker, Crandal Mergelman, and Tom Knowles
“We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people helping the girls be successful, with 25 girls on the team, I couldn’t do it without them,” said Bergman.
This is the largest team that Bergman has had while she has been head coach for the Cowboys softball program. The team consists of girls from Meeker, Rangely and Craig.
“This team is already looking very strong after the majority of the players competed together this summer with the Meeker Stampede program,” commented Bergman.
The team is led by seniors Ryann Mergelman and Kastyn Dembowski from Rangely and Meeker’s Kassidy Wille.
“These seniors bring great skill, experience, and positivity to the team and will be extraordinary leaders for us,” said Bergman.
The majority of the season will be on the road with only six home events.
“This season will prove to be a tough one with it being our travel year but we look forward to the bonding experiences on the long bus rides,” wrapped up Bergman. “I cannot wait to see this team come together even more and grow on and off the field. We are very excited to see where the season goes from here after a very successful first week of practice.”
The first home game will be a JV and varsity double header against Rifle on Aug. 24.
