MEEKER | The Cowboys are coming off of a successful weekend at the Clint Wells invite despite the weather.

“The weather wasn’t great for our pole vault Thursday at West Grand or meet Friday in Moffat County but that didn’t stop kids from setting personal records and putting forth an outstanding effort,” said head coach Hallie Blunt.

Sam Hightower jumped in rough weather conditions and went from a 10 feet 11 inch PR to clearing 12’2”. He is now standing sixth in state and tied for first in the meet of 40 vaulters.

On Friday the girls ran a 4×800 meter relay taking first in the meet and are now sixth in the state.

“There is a lot of room to improve in the 4×800 that is run by Ellie Hossack, Jayde Turner, Taylor Garcia and Braydin Raley. The girls are just tough kids that run hard for each other,” Blunt said.

The 4×400 meter relay of Hossack, Turner, Garcia, and Raley is 10th again with time to take off, and the girls 4×100 meter relay with Ainsley Selle, Garcia, Hossack, and Turner is still shining and sitting third. The same girls in the 4×200 are sixth in the state and right now it looks like all the relays will be headed to Lakewood for the state meet.

For individual events Selle placed third in the 100-meter dash, Reese Clatterbaugh finished in sixth place in the meet and is 16th in the state for triple jump and Rylee Sullivan is on the hunt at 20th. Addie Knowles is hanging on to 15th in hurdles and will get to run them at league. Judd Harvey had another big PR in both shot and discus; jumping to first in the state in shot with his throw of 49 feet 2.25 inches and placing second in the meet. In discus he is 14th in the state and placed fifth with a throw of 125 feet four inches. Dawson Wille also had a PR that got him fifth place and qualified him for state, sitting at 13th in shot.

Other placers who are still working to qualify are Wyatt Rollins who placed sixth in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5 minutes 12.17 seconds, Hightower placed sixth in high jump and then the 4×200 placed sixth.

“Those kids are working hard and if we can stay healthy and get a little weather, I think the league meet could be really fun,” said Blunt.

The league meet will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday it will also begin at 1 p.m. in Grand Junction.
