We’ve got 11 more days to reach our matching grant goal, with just $825 left to reach the $5,000 match from the Colorado Media Project.
You all are AMAZING, we are grateful for your ongoing support and encouragement, and we look forward to another year of bringing you independent local journalism: THIS IS NEWS YOU NEED.

Most of you probably know that the familiar depiction of Santa Claus — jolly old man with a snowy white beard and a red suit — came from an advertising campaign for Coca-Cola that started in 1930. (Once you see it, you can’t unsee it… the red and white Coca-Cola logo, the red and white Santa suit…)
You might not know that the familiar story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (you just sang that in your head) was also birthed from a 1930s advertising campaign. Montgomery Ward stores hired advertising copywriter Robert L. May to design a Christmas-themed coloring book for promotional purposes. The book was first released in 1939 and the resulting story turned into a Christmas classic.
In 1949, May’s brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, composed a now-famous song about the lead character, Rudolph. That song, recorded by Gene Autry, became the first No. 1 song of the 1950s. And now you know.

We’re on an early deadline this week and next, due to the holidays. Papers will go to press on Tuesday morning instead of Wednesday, and be delivered on Thursday as per usual.
Wishing you all a Christmas week filled with
peace, goodness, kindness and love!
