Doris Fern Walters
April 2, 1929 ~ Oct. 1, 2021
Doris Fern Walters, 92, of Meeker, Colorado (formerly of Philip, South Dakota), died Friday, Oct. 1, 2021.
Doris was one of seven children born to Rose Ann and Peter Bodkin. She was born in Bayard, Nebraska, on April 2, 1929.
All of Doris’s education was in Philip, South Dakota. She did obtain her GED later in life and was very proud of that.
Doris married Leonard Walters on Sept. 25, 1949. No children were born to this union but she considered her nieces and nephews “her kids.”
Doris served two terms as county treasurer starting in 1951. In 1955 she began working at the First National Bank and served as assistant cashier later. She worked at the bank until 1985. While in Philip she served in the American Legion Auxiliary and as president of the Red Cross, Philip Chapter for three years. She belonged to the Evening Guild, Business and Professional Women Philip Chapter, and Hospital Auxiliary. She then moved to Meeker, Colorado, and spent the rest of her life there.
Doris was Godmother to many and a second mother figure to her nieces and nephews. She loved to be surrounded by family and many beautiful friends and neighbors in Philip.
She loved to travel, dance, play cards, sewing and golfing. Doris was preceded in death by her parents Rose Ann and Peter Bodkin, her husband Leonard Walters, two sisters Mary Ellen Schuler and Darlene Sikes, two brothers Marvin (Bud) Bodkin and John Bodkin, and one nephew Blaine Bodkin. She is survived by sister Laurette Sikes and brother Ken Bodkin and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held July 2, 2022, at the Meeker Methodist Church at which time we will also hold a Bodkin Family Reunion as family meant everything to Doris.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Meeker Methodist Church or to HopeWest.
