John “Hoot” Gibson

| Our hearts are broken with the loss of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather John Ravell “Hoot” Gibson. He passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in Rangely, Colorado. Hoot was born to Cecil and Geraldine Gibson on Feb. 9, 1943, and grew up on a ranch in Athena, Oregon. He graduated from McEwen High School and then attended Eastern Oregon College earning a BS degree in social science. He entered the U.S. Army on June 14, 1966, serving in Vietnam as a 1st LT where he was awarded a bronze star. When he left the military, he and a friend went rodeoing as team ropers from Oregon to California where he met Geniel. The oilfield brought them to Rangely in 1979. After the children were raised Hoot pursued his passion for leather work and opened a boot and saddle shop. He later went to work for Rio Blanco County as a landfill operator. After retiring he went to work as a veterans service officer, a position in which he was very proud to serve. He was instrumental in seeing that Rangely received the Veterans Memorial Statue at Hefley Park. Hoot was active in the Rangely Christian Church and served as an elder for many years. He was a friend to all. He enjoyed hunting, roping and watching his grandchildren’s activities, especially sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Gary, and son Mark Hodges. He leaves behind a wife, Geniel Anderson Gibson; sons Bill Hodges and Brian Hodges (Theresa Hodges); a daughter Danielle LeBleu (Jerry LeBleu); two sisters Joan Hesp and Mary Gibson. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Rangely City Cemetery with military honors.
